Brake Controller Sway vs. Real Sway Control

What to Know Before You Tow

When you’re towing a caravan, trailer or horse float in Australia, stability is essential.

Many modern vehicles in Aussie now come with built-in brake controller sway mitigation, and while that sounds reassuring, it’s often misunderstood as actual sway control.

But here’s the truth: A vehicle’s brake controller sway system is not the same as a dedicated caravan sway control system.

And when it comes to keeping your caravan stable on our highways, backroads and windy coastal routes, that difference matters.

This guide breaks down the key differences between brake controller sway features and true asymmetric sway control, and explains why Tuson’s advanced system is the superior solution for Australian roads.

What Causes Caravan Sway? (And Why Brake Controllers Can’t Stop It Alone)

Caravan sway, also known as snaking, fishtailing, yawing or tow wobble, is one of the leading causes of caravan accidents in Australia.

Sway can be triggered by almost anything:

  • Wind gusts and passing trucks
  • Uneven or broken roads
  • Incorrect loading, weight imbalance or overloading
  • Poor tyre pressure
  • Sudden steering
  • Off-centre hitching
  • High speeds

Once sway begins, the caravan behaves like a pendulum behind the vehicle. Unless something actively counteracts that motion, the trailer continues to swing wider and wider, often pulling the tow vehicle with it until it dangerously swings out of control, possibly hitting passing cars or causing a rollover accident.

A standard brake controller simply doesn’t have the intelligence or responsiveness to manage this physics problem.

Brake Controller Sway Systems (Built Into Tow Vehicles): Helpful, But Limited

Many 4WDs and tow vehicles include “sway mitigation” through their onboard brake controller and stability systems.

These systems typically react by:

  • Applying all trailer brakes simultaneously
  • Reducing overall speed
  • Supporting the vehicle’s traction control

This is what we call symmetric sway control, because it slows the entire rig down to calm the sway. And while it’s better than nothing, it has key limitations:

  1. It treats sway as a speed problem, not a directional problem.
Caravans do not sway because they’re “too fast”, they sway because external forces push them sideways. Slowing down does not counter that sideways momentum.
  2. It applies equal braking to all wheels.
Braking both sides at once can reduce movement, but it cannot generate counter-force to push the caravan back into alignment.
  3. It reacts slower than dedicated systems.
Vehicle systems must detect sway through the vehicle, not the caravan, meaning they respond after the caravan has already destabilised.
  4. They are not designed to manage caravan dynamics.
Every caravan has unique weight distribution, tyre traction, axle configuration and braking characteristics. No in-vehicle system can account for that in real-time.

To put it simply: Tow vehicle brake controllers can help reduce sway severity, but they cannot correct it. For real sway correction, you need a system designed specifically for caravans.

Real Sway Control: Tuson Asymmetric Sway Control

Unlike vehicle-based systems, Tuson Asymmetric Sway Control is mounted directly on the caravan, constantly monitoring its motion and correcting sway at the source.

So, what makes it “real” sway control?

Tuson’s system applies braking asymmetrically, which means it can independently activate the left or right brake, not both. This directional braking is the key to stopping sway fast, with very minimal loss of traveling speed.

How Tuson Asymmetric Sway Control Works

If a wind gust pushes the caravan left, Tuson applies the left brake only, pulling the van back toward centre. If the caravan swings right, it activates the right brake. This generates a precise counter-force, actively cancelling the sway as it develops.

The system uses advanced sensors to monitor:

  • Sway angle
  • Sway acceleration
  • Sway velocity
  • Directional forces
  • Caravan load behaviour

Tuson’s smart technology can make up to 200 brake corrections in the time it takes to blink, so by the time the driver senses a problem, Tuson has long already corrected it.

Brake Controller Sway vs. Tuson Asymmetric Sway Control

Feature Built-In Brake Controller Sway Tuson Asymmetric Sway Control
Type of braking Symmetric (all brakes at once) Asymmetric (left/right independently)
Primary action Slows the combination down Applies directional force to counter sway
Correction speed Slow to moderate Near‑instant, hundreds of corrections
Designed for caravans? No Yes, purpose‑built
Prevents sway? Reduces severity Actively stops sway
Effectiveness at high speeds Limited Extremely high
Stability during harsh gusts / passing trucks Moderate Exceptional

Why Asymmetric Sway Control Is the Gold Standard for Safe Towing In Australia:

  1. It corrects sway, not just slows it.
Directional braking generates the counter-momentum needed to stabilise the caravan.
  2. It responds instantly.
200+ corrections per second ensures sway is stopped before becoming dangerous.
  3. It adapts to real-world conditions.
Weight distribution, brake wear, road conditions, tow vehicle characteristics – Tuson accounts for all of it.
  4. It reduces driver risk and reaction time.
Most sway incidents unfold in seconds. Tuson intervenes before panic sets in.
  5. It protects the caravan, passengers and other road users.
In conditions where symmetric brake controllers struggle, Tuson excels.

The Bottom Line: Brake Controllers Assist. Tuson Asymmetric Sway Control Saves.

If you’re towing in Australia and want:

  • Better stability
  • Faster sway correction
  • Greater towing safety
  • Peace of mind for your family
  • A smarter, more advanced towing setup

…then a vehicle’s brake controller sway mitigation is not a substitute for real caravan sway control.

Tuson Asymmetric Sway Control is the clear winner, and the safest option on the market.

Tow Safer. Tow Smarter. Tow with Tuson.
