What Is Caravan Sway – And Why Does Sway Control Matter?

Why Does Sway Control Matter?

When you're towing a caravan, stability matters. But even experienced drivers can find themselves facing a sudden sway event caused by wind, passing vehicles, road conditions, speed or changes in the way a caravan is loaded.

So, what exactly is caravan sway, and what can you do to help protect yourself, your passengers and your caravan when sway occurs?

What is caravan sway?

Caravan sway is the side-to-side movement of a caravan behind the tow vehicle. You may also hear it described as snaking, fishtailing or yaw.

A small amount of movement can quickly become more difficult to control if the forces causing the sway aren't counteracted. As the caravan moves from side to side, it can begin to influence the direction and stability of the tow vehicle.

That's why caravan sway isn't something to ignore.

What causes caravan sway?

Sway can have a number of causes, and it doesn't always take an obvious mistake to trigger it.

Common contributing factors include:

  • Strong crosswinds or sudden gusts
  • Air pressure from passing trucks and other large vehicles
  • Poor road conditions or uneven surfaces
  • Sudden steering movements
  • Travelling too fast for the conditions
  • Incorrect tyre pressures
  • Poor weight distribution or an uneven caravan load

In some situations, a combination of these factors can cause a caravan to begin moving laterally behind the tow vehicle.

And once sway starts, the important question becomes: how can it be brought back under control?

Watch Kevin explain how Tuson responds to sway

Understanding how sway happens is one thing. Seeing how the technology responds is another.

In the video below, Kevin from the Tuson team explains what caravan sway is, why it can become dangerous, and how Tuson's Asymmetric Sway Control uses intelligent, independent braking technology to respond to a sway event.

Watch the video to hear Kevin explain the technology and why having the right sway control can make a difference when you're towing.

Your caravan. Your family. Your responsibility.

No sway control system replaces good towing practices.

Load your caravan correctly. Check your tyres. Drive to the conditions. Allow plenty of stopping distance. And understand how your caravan behaves on the road.

But when you're towing your family, your belongings and everything that matters to you, having technology that can automatically respond when sway occurs provides another layer of safety.

Tuson Asymmetric Sway Control is designed to continuously monitor your caravan and automatically respond when sway is detected – working in the background while you focus on the road.

When it comes to caravan safety, safety is not an option. It's everything.
